Appliance disruptions feared in power grid test

This is a disturbing article about “a yearlong experiment with America’s electric grid [that] “could mess up traffic lights, security systems and some computers -  and make plug-in clocks and appliances like programmable coffemakers run up to 2 minutes fast.”  The test could cause Est Coast clocks to run as much as 20 minutes fast over a year while West Coast clocks are likely to be off by 8 minutes; and Texas clocks will experience a 2 minute speedup.

It points out that one company, North American Electric Reliability Corp. “runs the nation’s interlocking web of transmission lines and power plants.”
