PROTECT THE EPA – STOP RESOLUTION 26

SENATE RESOLUTION 26 – PETERSON NOTES – June 2, 2010

VOTE NO ON U.S. SENATE RESOLUTION 26 – PROTECT THE EPA

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the EPA could regulate greenhouse gases starting
in 2010.  This wise decision by the Supreme Court allows the United States to lead the
world in reducing greenhouse gases and fines the major polluters who don’t curtail their
greenhouse gas emissions.

The Climate/Energy bill draft proposed by Senators Kerry and Lieberman will undermine
the EPA Clean Water & Air Acts.  In addition, there will be no greenhouse gas reductions
until either 2017 or 2020, and then only 20% of 2005 greenhouse gas emissions. The draft
text of this climate/energy legislation is on Senator Kerry’s Website.

Thus, the EPA regulating and reducing greenhouse gases is the only solution to this
air pollution problem.  Now Alaska Senator Murkowski, and the polluting corporations
that support her, are supporting passage of U.S. Senate Joint Resolution 26.  This
resolution which will stop the EPA from setting regulations and fining polluters for releasing
greenhouse gases forever.

Senator Murkowski has introduced this legislation and, according to her U.S. Senate
Office, Resolution 26 will be brought to a vote on the floor of the U.S. Senate on June 10, 2010.
We must all work together to contact our elected officials to defeat this resolution and protect
the EPA from being gutted by passage of this bill.  Contact your elected officials and ask them to
VOTE NO ON U.S. JOINT RESOLUTION 26.

“…a dangerous assault on the agency (EPA) is gathering momentum in Congress, corporate boardrooms,
the media and the courts. The swarm of counterattacks all seek to strip the EPA of its power to regulate
greenhouse gas emissions from stationary sources like coal-fired power plants.
Some legislative proposals would even undo the EPA’s finding that greenhouse gases are
hazardous, taking the EPA out of the climate fight altogether…”

“…Now even more toxic legislation is gathering support. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska–
aided by corporate lobbyists like Jeffrey Holmstead, formerly with the Bush EPA
and now head of environmental strategies for the lobbying firm Bracewell & Giuliani, and Roger Martella Jr.,
a partner at Sidley Austin–has written a resolution that would overturn the EPA’s original greenhouse gas
endangerment finding…”

“…Murkowski’s resolution was introduced January 21 under the little-used Congressional Review Act,
which means it needs only fifty-one votes to pass and cannot be blocked from a vote by Senate majority
leader Harry Reid. Although it is called a “resolution of disapproval,” it would have the force of law. So
far forty other senators are on board, including three Democrats–Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Blanche
Lincoln of Arkansas and Ben Nelson of Nebraska…”
